ABAW CLE Event - Fostering Civility in the Legal Profession (1 hour of ethics credit) (July 16, 2015)
Civility is the cornerstone of justice. When all participants involved in the legal system act with civility by treating others with respect, listening with an open mind, and working towards best outcomes, all participants benefit and justice is served. On the contrary, when participants act with incivility, it extracts a high cost for our profession both in terms of impacting the bottom line and long term negative health effects for practitioners. For example, a study by Pearson and Porath, estimated that one multi-national law firm had lost over 2.8 million dollars because of one senior partner’s acts of incivility toward associates and staff. There is a growing body of scientific evidence that incivility often reduces productivity, creates inefficiency, and ultimately costs both practitioners and their clients time and money. Incivility often creates unnecessary conflict, which can cost some practitioners compromised mental and physical health. Perhaps most importantly, incivility compromises the administration of justice at all levels.

Starbucks Corporation, Law & Corporate Affairs Department, 2015-16 Diversity Mentorship Program
Starbucks Law & Corporate Affairs Department is pleased to announce the fifth year of the Starbucks Diversity Mentorship Program. This program will connect Starbucks in-house lawyers with private practice junior attorneys from diverse backgrounds in one-to-one mentorship relationships. Starbucks legal department boasts one of the most experienced and diverse groups of attorneys in the region, and its lawyers are eager to share their insights into learning the practice of law, succeeding in law firm and other private practice environments, and for those who are interested, pursuing in-house career opportunities.
Following a kick-off reception on July 15 for incoming mentees (as well as those who participated in the previous year’s program), this program will foster direct, informal interactions over a one-year period to help diverse junior attorneys learn their craft and network in the local community of legal professionals and business leaders. The program is open to all lawyers in private practice in their first six (6) years as an attorney, and who are members of one or more minority bar associations or diversity affinity groups.

In your cover letter, please identify your current area of practice (and your desired area, if different), your general interest in receiving mentoring, and the minority bar association(s) or affinity group(s) to which you belong. Volunteers needed for the Joint Asian Judicial Evaluation Committee (JAJEC) for 2015.
Over recent years, the specialty bar JECs have built up significant credibility in the judicial evaluation process in Washington state, which was one of the few states to have specialty bar participation in evaluating judicial nominees at the federal court level. Our continued credibility depends on our ability to continue conducting our evaluation process in a professional manner, and this, in turn, depends on volunteer time from as many of our constituents as possible. Please consider volunteering to participate in this important work!
